Witness to History -- Ella Mae Johnson (1904-2010)
Judson at University Circle pays tribute to long-time resident, Ella
Mae Johnson, who passed away March 22 at age 106.
Mrs. Johnson was an
inspiration to all who met her. She was a trailblazer who remained
active and engaged until her final days, most notably traveling to Washington,
D.C. at age 105 to witness Barack Obama’s inauguration bundled in a down, blue sleeping bag, (above right). While there, she
was interviewed by the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer’s Gwen Ifill.
Mrs. Johnson embodied Judson’s “smart living” philosophy, passionately
pursuing a career helping others in need. Her incredible story
is captured in the new book, “It
is Well with My Soul: The Extraordinary Life of a 106-year-old Woman," which
she co-authored with Patricia Mulcahy.
Recently National
Public Radio and NBC
Nightly News with Brian Williams paid tribute Mrs. Johnson. No doubt, her message of compassion
for others will continue to resonate for generations to come.
